Wild Horse Canyon (not to be mistaken for Little Wild Horse Canyon) is a pleasant walk in the San Rafael Swell just a few miles from Goblin Valley State Park. As Wild Horse Canyon cuts through the reef, you can hike it from the front or back. The first time I hiked it in November of 2007, I entered from the back. I remember being really impressed with the canyon, as it was one of my very first hikes in the San Rafael Swell. The trail is pretty flat with no major obstacles, and has couple of mild narrows sections. While enjoying the hike, I remember leaving a little disappointed, as I was unable to locate Wild Horse Window, and the pictographs located just below it, with the directions I had.
When I hiked this area again in March of 2010, I parked in front of the reef, so I could hike straight to Wild Horse Window. To get to the parking area, you will just need to drive about a half-mile past the Temple Mountain Junction on the road to Goblin Valley State Park and look for a dirt road breaking off to the right towards the reef. Wild Horse Window will be located up an alcove to the right of Wild Horse Canyon. It is only about a mile to the Wild Horse Window, though the hike is a bit steep. When you arrive, look for pictographs on the walls below it.
